We aim to renew this place of hospitality, welcome and learning as a resource for Church and society in a turbulent and changing world. Our aim is to ensure that all who come can share in our life and leave refreshed and renewed through their experience.
People who stay at the Mirfield Monastery, home of the Community of the Resurrection, come for a variety of different reasons. These can be individually arranged retreats, guided retreats led by a member of the Community or the College, week long special courses, or clergy retreats.

The First Professed Conference was held at Mirfield in September this year, and was a very happy occasion. There was a day of prayer together led by Fr Richard Bastable, providing excellent food for thought, and a very good talk on Conversation by Mikala Richards. Not all those in Temporary Profession were able to be here – because of commitments in their own Communities – but it was good to be together again!!

A picture-book of the Church of Resurrection has been specially commissioned to mark CR’s 125th anniversary and the re-hallowing of the Community Church, covering the church’s history from the beginning to today, with 40 picture-packed pages.

The weekend of 7-9 July 2017 marked the 125th anniversary of the Community, and we were delighted to welcome hundreds of guests from across the country (and beyond) to join the celebrations. CR belongs to the Union of Monastic Superiors, the conference of Benedictine and Cistercian Superiors, Roman Catholic and Anglican, and this year’s conference included a day at Lambeth Palace and a meeting with Archbishop Justin. The exchange we had with him was really good and made an impression on everybody. All attended the Eucharist celebrated by him, and afterwards met the Community of St Anselm, a 12-month annual experience of monastic life for young people from all over the world, which is proving very successful. Members of it come regularly to Mirfield to spend a week or so with us and share in our life, and always leave enthusiastic. The sense of ecumenical friendship at the Superiors’ conference, and of mutual support, is a wonderful sign to the Church of how we can put our divisions in their place and get on with sharing all we have in common.

Former students at the Hostel of the Resurrection in Leeds, which closed in 1976, raised money for 2 small painted doors which enclose the former double piscina in the Resurrection Chapel. The paintings are by Lorraine Lamond of Glasgow. St Wilfrid is striving heavenwards, while pointing to a shimmering representation of the Hostel, while St Cuthbert is coming from the sea, having his feet dried by otters. Behind St Cuthbert the Community’s collection of Saints’ relics is kept in a strongbox. These are fragments of St Cuthbert’s Coffin and relics of St Jean Vianney, St Machutus, The Blessed Marcellini Champagnat, and the Blessed Gabriella of the Community of Vitorchiano, with whom we have an ecumenical partnership – an unusual collection! The paintings are full of life and joy, and bring a splash of colour to that simple space.

Festival Day
The Community’s Festival Day (on Sunday 9 July) is fast approaching. It will include the re-hallowing of the Community Church as the culmination of a weekend of celebration of the Community’s 125th anniversary. We will welcome the Bishop of Norwich – also our Visitor – to lead the service.
Festival Day is preceded by a quiet afternoon for CR Companions on Friday 7 July and a day for CR’s supporters and wider family on Saturday 8 July. Following a midday service and lunch on the Saturday, there will be an opportunity to hear from brethren and others what the future holds for the Community, and our guests, and for the site as a whole.
All are welcome to come along to these events. We are always pleased to welcome parish groups, so do consider joining us – particularly for Festival Day.
